Derek Cole: One Hour Heating & Air Conditioning Franchise Owner of the Year 2024

The Authority Brands' 2025 Convention brought all of our brands together in one place to learn, grow, and celebrate. One of the highlights of our event was the Gala Awards, where we recognized our Franchise Owners of the Year for 2024.

Derek Cole of Laurinburg, NC was named Franchise of the Year for One Hour Heating & Air Conditioning.

In 2024, Derek grew his business at 40.1% with a net profit of 13.8%, despite a tough year in the HVAC industry. Through determination and sound management, he was able to defy industry trends.

Derek puts education at the forefront of his business, leveraging social media platforms to educate homeowners and build trust. He is also heavily involved in his local community, coaching football for the Scotland High School Scots at Pate Stadium and shaping the next generation through his Phoenix Program, which trains high school students to become technicians.

“His dedication to mentorship, team building, and continuous improvement strengthens not only his business but the entire franchise network,” said Lance. “He is a leader, a mentor, a brand advocate, and an innovator—truly deserving of this honor.”

How many years have you been a franchise owner with One Hour Heating & Air Conditioning?

15 years

What was your professional background before becoming a franchise owner?

I previously owned a residential HVAC company that we converted to a One Hour Heating & Air Conditioning.

What do you feel has been the biggest benefit of being part of a franchise?

Networking and relationships. We are not just a franchise. We are a family. Everyone is always helpful with any questions or process help you need. We look out for each other and are truly a family of brands.

What do you credit your success to?

First and foremost, my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ; my family—my wife, my dad, my brother, —and my team. These folks execute the vision every day with our clients by providing outstanding UWIN, Can’t Lose Service every single time.

What advice would you give to someone considering joining a franchise?

This is not just a franchise, it's a family. Everyone is here with open arms to help however you need. The blueprint is successful. You are not having to reinvent anything. Follow the recipe and the business will be baked to perfection. The challenge I see over and over is folks saying, ‘That doesn’t work here, I can’t ask for that here.’ Just follow the directions and you’ll be successful.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

I volunteer at a few churches, but Jesus and work is about it these days.
